Tonto National Monument
East of Roosevelt Dam on SR 88/188, Tonto National Monument preserves the most accessible of south-central Arizona's prehistoric cliff dwellings. The remains of a two-story pueblo built in a natural cave are visible from the headquarters parking area. A .5-mile paved foot trail ascends 350 feet and leads to cliff dwellings that were occupied by the Salado culture in the 13th and 14th centuries. Summer temperatures are high; wear a hat and suitable shoes and carry sufficient water.
Ranger-conducted, 3-hour tours to the less accessible 40-room Upper Cliff Dwelling are available November through April. The tour is limited to 15 people per day; reservations are required. Write Tonto National Monument, HC 02, Box 4602, Roosevelt, AZ 85545 or phone (928) 467-2241 for reservations.
A visitor center and museum contain artifacts from the Salado culture, including examples of the pottery and woven textiles for which they are noted. Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum. Park and visitor center open daily 8-5; closed Dec. 25. Trail to the Lower Cliff Dwelling closes 1 hour before park closing. Picnic area 8-4:45. Admission $3, under 17 free. Phone (928) 467-2241.
